• Your body exists in the past and your mind exists in the future. In yoga, they come together in the present.

    B.K. S. Iyengar

  • “If you can breathe, you can do yoga” T.K.V Desikachar

We all have an idea in our heads about what yoga is, who it is for, and what ‘body’ is required to do it. Many believe you need to be young, hot, flexible, and female…I believe otherwise!

There is much more to yoga than the physical practice, it is predominantly a breath practice. As my teacher (Michèle) says, “the breath initiates movement and movement is the result of the breath, not the other way around!”.

Some might see yoga as a moving meditation, others, a spiritual practice, or simply as exercise and stretching. Theres no right or wrong way to ‘do yoga’, it’s a completely individual practice and everyone will experience it differently.

Contrary to popular belief, the goal of yoga is not to perfect our physical asana (pose) and effortlessly float up into handstand. Social media may portray Yoga as a reaching a physical ideal, but it is much more than that. There is no ‘end goal’….in fact, our practice is never done! It will unfold and evolve over time and this is where we will learn more about ourselves and develop a deeper insight to our soul purpose in life.

I use Yoga as a way to get in touch with my body and inner spirit. For me, yoga is a spiritual practice as much as it is a great way to keep my body strong and flexible. You will ultimately find your own style and your own practice, which will benefit you in your own unique way - thats the beauty of it!

My yoga experience

My early experience of yoga was very mixed, I went from Yoga-lates (basically pilates mixed with a bit of yoga), to Rocket, to Vinyasa, to Hatha…and many of other styles and variations along the way. It wasn’t until I found a local Astanga MySore class run by, my now, main yoga teacher and mentor Michèle Pianigiani…this was when I caught the ‘yoga bug’. I was out of work at the time and desperate for some structure, so I pushed through the cold dark January mornings, and was in the yoga studio at 6am attempting to learn the Astanga sequence (with A LOT of help from Michèle)…fast forward a couple of weeks and I was hooked…8 years on I still regularly attend Michèle’s classes - I love them and deeply value his mentorship.

Over the years I’ve adopted an all ‘styles’ approach to yoga rather than following a specific discipline. I am mostly influenced by Ashtanga, Forrest, Hatha, Vinyasa flow, Restorative, and Yin, and I know this will continue to adapt as my practice develops. I like this, it keeps things fresh and I am excited to see how my practice will evolve going forward.
